Oshawa is an award-winning community situated on the shores of Lake Ontario. We are renowned for our beautiful floral displays, landscaping, parks and environmental initiatives. The City of Oshawa received national and international recognition from Communities in Bloom (1999, 2002, 2003, and 2004), and achieved a gold award at the United Nations endorsed International Awards for Liveable Communities.
Oshawa offers an extensive parks and trail system, including the 11-km Waterfront Trail along Lake Ontario. Our 46-acre Lakeview Park is situated on the waterfront and features gazebos, picnic shelters, playgrounds, a splash pad, sports fields, sand beach and a boardwalk. Oshawa is home to the Second Marsh (a Provincially Significant Wetland Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and the largest remaining wetland in the Greater Toronto Area). In addition, Oshawa’s Valley Botanical Gardens features one of North America’s largest contemporary peony collections, a hand-crafted wrought iron gazebo, a footbridge, accessible walking paths and a waterfall.
Oshawa is a diversified and innovative city offering a wide range of housing options, first-class post-secondary education, quality health care, award-winning recreation facilities and a vibrant downtown. The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Parkwood National Historic Site, Ontario Symphony, museums, live theatre and a variety of annual events also enrich our city.
Community Greening Initiatives and Projects
Oshawa has a number of dedicated organizations and volunteers that help to beautify our community. Each year, nearly 20,000 volunteers take part in Oshawa PITCH-IN Week. Other greening initiatives that are organized through community partnerships include: Communities with Brooms, Scoutrees, community planting days, and tree planting workshops. The City encourages residents, businesses and organizations to take pride in their gardens through the “Growing with Pride” and Garden of the Week programs. With the support of the City, the community is developing three new community gardens. One of the gardens is on a 10-acre plot of land and is split between a teaching garden and a community garden.
