An hour and a half north of Toronto is the “Gateway to Muskoka”, Gravenhurst, Ontario - nestled between two lakes, surrounded by trees and on the edge of the Canadian Shield, recognizable by large outcrops of beautiful granite.
Gravenhurst has been involved with Communities In Bloom since 1999. Named the Provincial Winner in 2005, Gravenhurst has since been a National Finalist with Five Blooms for the past 3 years.
Gravenhurst’s history and natural beauty fit well within the judging categories of the Communities In Bloom program, which is the type of community-based activity that brings out the best in a community!
Community Greening Initiatives or Projects
Many initiatives are taking place, with the help of businesses, groups and volunteers, to keep Gravenhurst a ‘green’ community:
• Shoreline restoration and clean-up projects are taking place at Muskoka Wharf.
• Council has implemented an Environmental Committee and passed new Anti-Idling Policies and a Tree By-Law.
• The 100 year old stand of white pine trees at Gull Lake has received deep root fertilization, professional pruning, and the addition of several more young trees to the stand.
• New irrigation systems have been installed in public gardens, and low flow toilets installed in public parks to conserve water resources.
